Breakouts + Volume: The Winning Combination

A breakout without volume is suspicious. A breakout with volume is confirmation. Here's how to combine them.

Why Volume Matters

Volume tells you if "smart money" is behind the move:

• High volume breakout → Institutions are entering. The move has conviction.
• Low volume breakout → Retail traders pushing price. Likely to reverse.

The Volume Breakout Rules

#### Rule 1: Volume Must Expand

On the breakout candle, volume should be at least 1.5x the 20-period average volume.

Breakout_Volume / Avg_Volume_20 >= 1.5  →  Valid breakout
Breakout_Volume / Avg_Volume_20 < 1.5   →  Suspect, wait for confirmation

#### Rule 2: Consecutive Volume

Best breakouts have 2-3 candles with above-average volume in the breakout direction.

#### Rule 3: Volume Climax Reversals

If volume is 3x+ average and the candle closes weak (long wick), it's a volume climax — the move is exhausted. Expect a reversal.

Applying to Different Timeframes

Pattern-Specific Volume Rules

Triangle Breakout

Volume should contract during the triangle formation (as price squeezes), then expand sharply on the breakout. This is one of the most reliable patterns.

Range Breakout

Volume should be normal during the range and spike 2x+ on the breakout. If volume is already elevated during the range, the breakout may fail.

Trendline Breakout

A trendline breakout with volume is very reliable. Without volume, expect the trendline to act as support/resistance and hold.

The Fakeout Filter

Don't enter on the first candle of the breakout. Wait for:

1. Breakout candle closes above resistance (or below support)
2. Second candle confirms (doesn't close back inside the range)
3. Volume on both candles is above average

If all three conditions are met, the breakout is high-probability.

Pro Tip

Log every breakout trade in your journal noting the volume ratio. Track whether your volume filters improve your win rate. Most traders find they eliminate 60% of fakeouts while keeping 90% of genuine breakouts.
