The Best Trading Setups for Each Market Condition

Trading Setups by Market Condition

Trending Market (60% of the time)

Price is making consistent HH/HL (up) or LH/LL (down).

Best setups:
  • Pullback to moving average — Price retraces to 20 or 50 EMA in direction of trend
  • Flag/pennant continuation — Brief consolidation before trend resumes
  • Breakout of pullback structure — Price breaks above/below the pullback trendline
Risk: Counter-trend entries (tempting but dangerous)

Ranging Market (30% of the time)

Price is bouncing between support and resistance.

Best setups:
  • Range bounce — Buy at support, sell at resistance
  • Inside bar — Consolidation within the previous candle's range
  • Bollinger Band mean reversion — Price touches outer band and returns to middle
Risk: Breakout trades in a range (fakeouts are common)

Volatile Market (10% of the time)

Wide swings, big candles, after news events.

Best setups:
  • Post-news stabilization — Wait 15-30 min after news, then trade the first pullback
  • Trendline bounce — Strong trends during volatility respect trendlines
Risk: Scalping (spreads widen, stops get hit)

Pro Tip

First identify the market condition. Then choose the appropriate setup. Using a trending strategy in a ranging market will lose you money.
